Thomas Schürmann joined the firm as an Associate in 2019. He is qualified German and European Patent Attorney and has been active in the field of industrial property rights since 2014. He has extensive experience in patent application drafting, patent prosecution and adversarial proceedings including litigation proceedings. His particular fields of technical expertise are automotive technology (transmissions, control and assistance systems, structures), medical devices (cardiovascular, ophthalmic and ventilation devices), aerospace technology and textiles. Overall, he is very proficient in all areas of mechanical engineering, having extensively worked on technologies such as cutting inserts and drive trains.

Work Experience
Thomas Schürmann gained extensive experience in drafting and prosecution of patent applications, personally having already drafted several hundred patent applications. Further fields of specialization are opposition and nullity proceedings at the European Patent Office and the Federal Patent Court, as well as advising on litigation proceedings. Additionally, he regularly prepares freedom-to-operate analyses, including product reviews, re-design suggestions, and appropriate search strategies. He is also proficient in IP due diligences for mergers and acquisitions and is experienced in representation in patent validity proceedings (opposition and nullity proceedings), as well as participation in infringement proceedings of national and international corporations in the technical fields of medical technology, manufacturing technologies and mechanical engineering. Thomas Schürmann has been involved in the strategic development of international IP portfolios (patents and designs) for startups, small and medium-sized businesses, as well as national and international technology corporations with revenues of several billion EUR and advised regarding process implementation for IP risk & opportunity management in start-ups.
